Physician Assistant

A Physician Assistant is a type of health care provider who practices medicine under the supervision of a physician or a surgeon. These practitioners can formally examine patients, diagnose injuries and illnesses, and provide treatment. I have been interested in this career field for quite some time, I had always wanted to be a doctor growing up but now I wish to help people in a more personal way. Physician Assists are also responsible for conducting physical examinations, assisting in surgeries, and writing prescriptions for patients.

To become a Physician Assistant I would need the following requirements:

  • 4 years of Undergraduate school to earn a degree in Bachelor of Science, Public Health

  • 2 years of the coursework in basic and behavioral sciences

  • Apply to a Physician Assistant program and study the following:

    • Chemistry

    • Physiology

    • Anatomy

    • Microbiology

    • Biology

  • Complete 3 years Program in Graduate school at a Physician Assistant program to obtain Masters degree.

Salary and Job Outlook:

The median annual salary was 90,930 per year, and the employment of a PA is projected to grow about 38 percent from 2012-2022 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is much faster than average for all occupations. This is due to demand for more healthcare services from the growing and aging population along with the spread of disease. There also seems to be a shortage of healthcare providers such as PAs
